Anna University VC expresses shock

CHENNAI: Anna University
Vice-Chancellor Prof P
Mannar Jawahar expressed
shock and surprise over the
murder of a teacher by a student
in the class room and
attributed it to the infl uence
of cinema on young minds.
Responding to newspersons
queries at the launch
of St John’s Public School
(SJPS) here, he said the infl
uence of cinema and TV
soap operas make students
take to violence for petty issues.
Noting that teacher complaining
to the parents about
lack of attention to studies
was routine and it was being
done only to shape up
the student Prof Mannar
Jawahar said ‘’we are hearing
about such an incident
for the fi rst time in Tamil
Nadu’’.
Denying that this dangerous
trend, seen often in educational
campuses abroad,
was now creeping into Indian
educational campuses
also Prof Mannar Jawahar
said ‘’we cannot say like
that because we are seeing
such an incident for the fi rst
time’’. ‘’It might be more
out of frustration and the
way the student was being
brought, he added.
Prof Mannar Jawahar said
schools should allot time for
imparting moral and valuebased
education to students
so that they don’t turn killers.
Asked whether Anna
University would resort to
screening of students to prevent
them from carrying any
weapons into the classrooms
to prevent such incidents,
prof Mannar
Jawahar said ‘’there is a difference
between school and
college students’..
‘’The college students
are more mature’’, he said,
adding, it’s quite rare to see
‘’such a rage’’ on a 13-yearold
boy, who had killed the
teacher.
He, however, ruled out installation
of metal detectors
in the University campus to
screen the students saying
Universities in India had
never seen such an incident.
‘’So the installations of metal
detectors is unnecessary’’,
he added. Lamenting that
students were not being
brought up with discipline,
the Anna University VC said
society had a larger impact
on students which could turn
them the other way.
