Bill to levy more taxes for vehicle carriers entering TN introduced

CHENNAI: A Bill to levy
more taxes for vehicle carriers
entering Tamil Nadu
from other States and life
time tax for new tourist motor
cabs was introduced in
the State Assembly on Monday.
Transport Minister V Senthil
Balaji moved the bill
during Zero Hour in the
State Assembly. Moving
the Bill, the Minister said
the bill envisages levying
life time tax for tourist motor
cabs as similar kind of
vehicles when used as personal
vehicles were levied
life time tax.
According to statement
of objects and reasons of
he Bill, there were diffi culties
in collecting quarterly
tax based on the number of
seats for tourist maxi cabs.
They have different makes
and have different fl oor areas
and different number of
seats. “Hence it has been
decided to levy life time tax
for new vehicles having a
fl oor area of more than six
sqm and quarterly tax based
on the fl oor area for already
registered vehicles,” the
Minister said.
Following the signifi cant
increase in use of construction
equipment vehicles
like excavator, road scrappers
and cranes, the present
annual tax levied for such
vehicles was very minimal.
“Hence it has been decided
to levy an annual tax of Rs
10,000 on such vehicles”,
he added. Senthil Balaji
said the Bill also envisages
imposition of quarterly tax
on private service vehicles
on seat basis by classifying
them as Air-condition and
non-AC vehicles.
“The use of private service
vehicles for the purpose of
carrying persons in connection
with trade or business
of the owner of the vehicles
are increasing now a days
and the tax levied on them
at present is lesser than ordinary
stage carriages,” he
added. The government
also decided to levy separate
tax for reserve stage carriers
or spare buses which were
used on special occasions
on special permit as contract
carriages.
At present these reserve
stage carriages are levied a
tax which was 25 per cent
lesser than the regular stage
carriage buses, the Minister
said. The government
also decided to levy more
tax on vehicles coming
from other States to Tamil
Nadu. “At present the tax
collected from other state
vehicles is on par with the
tax collected on the corresponding
vehicles in Tamil
Nadu,” the Minister said.
Since other state contract
carriages use the road more
intensively when compared
to Tamil Nadu vehicles
and the neighbouring
states are collecting higher
rate of tax to the vehicles
of other stages while entering
into their states, it has
been decided to impose a
high rate of tax for such
vehicles, he said.
