Gold, diamond worth Rs 14 cr looted from Jewellery shop

TIRUPPUR: In a major heist, burglars struck at the famous Jewellery showroom of ‘Alukkas’ and decamped with Rs14 crore worth of jewellery and diamonds in Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu early this morning. Reports received at the police headquarters here said the miscreants had gained entry into the multi-storied showroom by making a gaping hole in the ground fl oor and decamped with the gold and diamond jewellery. They used welding machines to make hole in the walls. Police quoting preliminary inquiries said about 40 kg of gold and one kg of diamond jewelleries were looted by the gang. The gang after entering the premises emptied the ground fl oor and then moved to the fi rst fl oor and completely looted the jewellery. The total value of the looted jewelleries was worth more than Rs 14 crore. Senior police offi cial rushed to the spot and questioned the employees. Going by the modus operandi of the crime, police suspect the involvement of more than four to fi ve persons in the burglary. Since it was a high secured shop and security personnel were deployed round the clock, how the gang managed to hoodwink them and make a gaping hole in the wall, remained a mystery. The robbery was all the more glaring as the shop was located in close proximity to a police station. The hole was big enough through which one person could easily sneak through it. Special teams were formed to nab the culprits.
