Girl kidnapped for ransom rescued by police

DINDIGAL: Police rescued an eight-year-old girl, who was kidnapped by a gang for ransom at Santhapuram near Hubli in Karnataka, Saturday night. Police sources said here on Sunday that the girl, who was studying in fourth standard, was abducted by a gang while she was returning to home from the school at Vedikkaran Valasai village near Oddanchathiram in Dindigul district of Tamilnadu on last Friday evening. The kidnapping came to light yesterday, after one of the gang members called up the girl’s father Kuppusamy, a poultry farm owner, stating that they had abducted the girl and demanded Rs fi ve Lakh to set her free. On a complaint from Kuppusamy, a special team was formed by the Dindigul police. The team tracked the mobile call and after a day-long search rescued her in Karnataka. However, the gang members managed to escape. The girl was brought to Dindigul this morning by the special police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Janakiraman. Meanwhile, unconfi rmed reports said the girl was released by the kidnappers after her father paid Rs three Lakh ransom.
